JAN JUC nippers at 9:15 AM on December 29 2009 - Learn beach safety whilst being sun safe

Jan Juc SLSC has implemented key steps to ensure there are reduced, safer levels of sun exposure for their life savers and nippers.

The Jan Juc nippers program is excellent. Nippers are off the beach by 11 AM. Jan Juc recognises that UV levels rise sharply between 11 AM and 3 PM Summer time, (10 AM and 2 PM in non daylight saving states). Jan Juc knows that it would be irresponsible to run Nipper activities during these peak UV hours.

Other nipper initiatives implemented by Jan Juc are a stand out, - especially when compared to some neighbouring beaches.

Jan Juc nippers are all provided with long sleeved rash vests and an excellent broad brimmed hat that nippers must wear between activities / events.

Furthermore, Jan Juc SLSC carefully polices these initiatives. Children must comply to be able to participate.

Children learn from a young age that the most dangerous aspect of our beaches is not sharks, rips, rocks or currents, but the sun.

Jan Juc under 8 nippers 2009 / 2010 - Note the long sleeved rash vests and excellent bucket hats

The excellent Jan Juc SLSC attention to sun safety extends to their adult life savers also.

The life savers all wear long sleeved shirts and a broad brimmed hat while patrolling.

The considered approach Jan Juc takes to sun care is demonstrated in their one page advice sheet for members and guests. You can download that fact sheet here.

ACSCM hopes that surf life saving clubs from all over Australia will see fit to copy the excellent initiatives demonstrated by Jan Juc club to better protect their members, nippers and the public in general.

ACSCM congratulates Jan Juc SLSC President Steve Jewson and his management team on their efforts.

OTHER CLUBS?

Some other Victorian clubs are not quite so conscious of the importance of sun safety. Here are some examples:
